I think we all kind of knew this. Maybe Stats Can could spend our money more wisely by doing some thorough investigating and then reporting on all the ways the rich find dubious tax shelters and ways they buy favourtism; and then maybe we could put some pressure into shutting some of this down. You know, just close the gap a tiny bit. Not too much mind you... we wouldn't want to tick them off too much.

Yeah, I know... it's kind of a gross-out image. But that's half the fun of this cartoon. Just a silly joke using the recent issue of what to do with "brownfields" left over from departed factories and such.

The top one was the first one I submitted, at an earlier date, when there were still traces of snow to be found in heavily shaded areas or in mounds in some parking lots. So, when all the snow had, thankfully, gone, I drew up another one, and it's the one that made the paper.

I think the government and business should be at least as accountable as high school students, and if they aren't, they should fail. What do you think?

I have nothing against the idea of Chinese students coming into our area. I tried to convey this in this cartoon by having one character say that "I'm sure they are good kids." On a personal note, one of the finest students I taught, a little bit before I retired, was a teenage girl from China. In fact she showed me how to write the word "music" in Chinese. I incorporated the letter "K" into it. That's the initial of my first wife, Kate, who had recently died from breast cancer. This became the tattoo that is on my upper right arm.

The problem I have with the China is similar to the one I have with the U.S.A.: While the individual citizens may be fine, the governments are a little bullish. China is obviously non-democratic, but then again, the form of democracy that the U.S. presents (and Canada, too, alas) is not always the purest form that was visualized by the founding fathers. It seems to me that "power" and capitalism often gets in the way of what's best for all the citizens of both their own country and the world. ... So, if your Chinese, American, or Canadian, please do not be personally offended... this is not about you as an individual, and it's not even about most of "your people", it's about your country and its way of doing things... often times beyond your control.

I'm not a big fan of how governments in particular encourage gambling with all their lottery and casino activities... and especially the way they swamp us with advertising, trying to get us hooked. But their concern over small time community "gambling" in the form of bingoes and other petty carnival activity seems both hypocritcal and over the top. Thus this cartoon.
